AU Sport and the University of Adelaide have a long history of rewarding sporting excellence with the first Blue awarded in 1908.

The history of the Blue began in 1836 following a boat race between Oxford and Cambridge universities, first as a blue ribbon tied to the bow of the Cambridge boat and later as the colour of the stripes worn by the Oxford crew. Over time, any student who represented Oxford against Cambridge was entitled to wear a dark blue jacket. Eventually, Blues were awarded for outstanding achievement in university sport – a tradition adopted at universities in many parts of the world.

In more recent times, AU Sport has expanded the number of sporting awards with athletes, coaches, volunteers and clubs being rewarded for excellence at local, intervarsity, state and national level. This year also sees a change in the way clubs are nominated for Club of the Year. Previously, nominations were put forwarded by AU Sport staff based on results from the ‘Club Reporting Survey’ and their general experience with the club. The AU Sport Board would then make the final decision on the winner. From 2018, clubs can now nominate themselves.

All awards will be presented in front of the University community, including University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and AU Sport Patron, Professor Peter Rathjen, at the 2018 Blues function, which will be held at the National Wine Centre on Wednesday, 21 November.

Clubs are asked to review their achievements over the past 12 months, as well as the achievements of their athletes, coaches and volunteers, and nominate them for one of the following AU Sport Awards:
- Blues
- Half Blue
- Club Letters (Competition)
- Club Letters (Service)
- Service to University Sport
- IV Certificate of Merit
- Coach of the Year
- Volunteer of the Year
- Patron's Cup
- Club of the Year
