Once again, 310 members of The University of Adelaide community hit the pavement in what some said, was perfect running weather for the 2019 City Bay. There was a great range of diversity in this year’s team – the young, the mature-age, wheelchair athletes, first timers, social participants and those supporting their friends make the distance.

This year, we had 23 athletes tackle the half marathon, the first time the distance had been held as part of this event. These athletes had an early 6:30am start time. They headed towards the City and then back to Glenelg to ensure that most were not engulfed by the thousands competing in the shorter distance. Andrew Heathersaw can claim the inaugural UofA Half Marathon Champion in this event with a time of 1:28:25.

Our pacesetters for the 12km went out hard with many of our team trying to crack the one hour mark. Those who didn’t get in the training that they had hoped were just trying to make it without stopping. Overall winner, Jack Rayner set a 21.33 (km/h) pace and won the event in 33.45mins. Our fastest 12km runner was Nathan Pope with a time of 45:25min. Jack Masfield was a close second with a time of 45:25min and Jo Pham was our fastest female with a time of 52:29min.

Post-race, University of Adelaide team members headed to the Uni Hub where volunteers from The University of Adelaide Volunteer Network assisted athletes to fuel up with pancakes and other goodies. Many were expecting a traditional BBQ but when they realised that pancakes were on offer, team members heard ‘Ohh Pancakes, yum!’.

Thank you to all of The University of Adelaide City Bay Team Sponsors without their assistance, our team package would not be as valuable as it is.
