Meet at Uni boatsheds, Foreman St West Beach
You will learn skills like paddling forwards and backwards, turning, stopping, support strokes, capsizes and simple rescues. These skills are essential if you want to use the AUMC kayaks in the future or go on a kayak day or overnight trip. Please read ALL the details below before registering.
Weather forecast is good - cool (16 degrees) and slight chance of a shower
As this day is skills based you will get wet, so bring a towel and change of clothes. You will need to bring and wear suitable clothing, which includes bathers, shorts or leggings (not jeans), a long sleeved synthetic top, rashie or thermal top if you get cold, old sandshoes or boatshoes that can get wet, hat or beanie, water bottle, snacks and maybe your camera in a waterproof bag. A light rain jacket is good to keep off the wind. Cotton t-shirts are not suitable as they become heavy and cold when wet, also thongs, crocs or sandals are useless - they fall off in the water.
We will meet at the West Beach Boat Shed at 10 am, pack up the trailer, then head up to the launch point together. We should be back there by 2pm. Please notify in your registration if you have a car, and can transport people from West Beach to the kayak launch spot.
If you want to catch a bus from the city it is easy to get to the boatsheds. The J1 leaves stop W1 on Currie St south side at 9.21am, arriving stop 14 Tapleys Hill Rd east side at 9.48 am, then just walk through to the boatsheds. One of us will give you a ride back to the city afterwards.
