ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY SPORTS since 1874

In 1874 The University of Adelaide was founded by an act of parliament. From the very first days sport was an integral part of life at Adelaide. Although competitive meets occurred during the early years, it was not until 1881 that sport was formalized. In 1881 the AU Boat club was established. The AU Boat club acted as the impetus for the other clubs to form. 1885 saw the establishment on the AU Lawn Tennis Club, followed by the AU Lacrosse Club in 1889. These three culturally rich clubs came together in the same year as the inaugural Modern Olympics, 1896, to form the AU Sports Association. Many of our earlier clubs have played a crucial role in shaping and reshaping sports in South Australia …and as they say the rest is history…
