The Adelaide University Sports Association (AUSA) representatives have just returned from the national conference in Sydney with a clearer understanding of how much more work is required by the Association to raise the profile of sport and active recreation on campus. The opportunity to network and share experiences across the University sport spectrum and especially amongst the Go8 universities indicates that there are a number of areas, including university and community engagement as well as sports development, on which Adelaide falls behind. Financially, the basic funding based on a per capita basis shows sport is well under-funded at Adelaidecompared to other universities – in some cases, by over 100% of current funding arrangements. The Executive Officer of AUSA said, “We need to prove to the University that we are ready for the next stage of our development through a strong commitment to strategic and facility planning; best practice governance principles and the formulation of innovative business cases. The rest of Australia is showing us the way forward and we need to grab it in both hands”.
