As from 1 January 2010, something happened to the Sports Association for the first time in nearly 115 years.
It is now directly affiliated to the University, rather than through the Union, being the last Go8 university to undertake this step in its development. It was believed that, indeed, the Association was ready to stand on its own two feet and deal directly with the University on such matters as funding and away from student politics, which should remain the preserve of the Union Board.
The Association will still have a mature and open working relationship with the Union at both staff and Board level to ensure the flow of information between the two bodies is maintained.
The new relationship with the University will strengthen the role of the Association as a strong advocate for sport, active recreation and health development on campus.
