In February Leigh Stokes, president of the Adelaide University Gliding Club was awarded the gold C badge with 3 diamonds from the FAI, sport aviation's international record-keeping organization. The badge is comprised of 3 tests, being a 300km flight to a goal, a 500km free distance flight and a flight with a height gain of 5000m. The three separate flights were all made from the AU Gliding Club's home airfield at Stonefield. The awarding of the diamond badge is one of the sport's highest honors and on the bucket list of most serious glider pilots. Leigh's achievement has been entered into the international register of recipients including the club's chief flying instructor Catherine Conway and a small number of other Australians. This has helped to prove that the club and its airfield can support a pilot's development to a high level in the sport.
