12 sports - Australian Rules football, Badminton, Basketball, Football (soccer), Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Tennis, Touch, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball and Water Polo fast 5s.
With the new qualification for the 2009 Australian University Games (AUG) of only one team per university per sport able to be entered into the AUG, ie one team in either Division 1 or Division 2, participation in the Southern University Games (SUG) is particularly critical for some team sports.
The AUSA's sports development officers, Holly Noack and Caitlin Stanley, will be liaising with the sports coordinators for those sports affiliated to AUSA to ascertain their interest in nominating teams for the SUG.

In 2009, Australia's largest annual multi sport event will be held on the Gold Coast. The Games provide an opportunity for university athletes to compete against each other in a national multi sport event. As such, the Games has built a reputation as a not-to-be-missed event attracting over 6,000 participants from over 40 universities each year. In 2009, the Games boasts a program of 28 sports and will operate with support from Queensland Events, Gold Coast City Council and the Queensland Government....
